Interview with Simon Southwood

Sauvage swimsuit designer Elizabeth Southwood and her business partner Simon Southwood shrieked when they heard the news that their red and yellow swimsuit design made it on Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue cover model Irina Shayk, the most coveted spot for a swimsuit in the industry. “We got lucky,” Simon commented. “We knew what they wanted—they want sexy, but not sleezy,” he said. “So we made it sensual and glamorous.” .“We’re always thinking about being glamorous,” Simon said of the label, which has operated out of San Diego for over 20 years. “The greatest thing is that the women feel comfortable in the suit.”

After the Miami Swimshow we asked Simon Southwood his point of view on the beachwear sector:

What is your balance of the last edition of the Miami Swimshow?

The Miami show was a good success for us, although traffic was generally a little slow.
As a progressive Designer collection, Sauvage is able to offer the market something new and fashion forward and, of course , we use only European fabrics !

How is the beachwear market situation in the US?

The market is slowly recovering from the recession, there is more optimism , but people are still being careful with their budgets. Again it is the innovative companies (like Sauvage!) who are having the most success.

MarediModa is the showcase for the best European beachwear fabrics. As MarediModa's visitor, in your opinion, how much important is the "Made in Europe" in the beachwear sector? For which reasons?

We visit MarediModa every year, Made in Europe us very important, many of the larger U.S.manufacturers use Chinese fabric, and in our opinion there is no comparison. The discerning customers appreciate the finer quality of fabric and trims form Europe, and this really helps us and influences our designs.
